Din Tai Fung Chinese Restaurant

After my long trip overseas, we decided to head to The Gardens Shopping Mall to try out DIN TAI FUNG Chinese Restaurant. The restaurant is famous for their steamed shanghai dumplings (xiao long pao).

The line was so long that we had to wait at least 20 minutes before our table was ready...luckily they had an open kitchen concept..it's quite interesting to see how the Chefs prepared their world famous steamed dumplings.

This is how they steam the dumplings. This particular chef works non-stop in ensuring that there is a continuous supply of freshly steamed dumplings.

While waiting for our food to come, Fong Fong busies himself with the available cutleries.

The first dish arrived within 5 minutes. This is one of their signature noodle dish called "La Mien" literally translated it means "pulled noodles". It is so called due to the chef "pulling and tugging" on thick rolls of flour to produce thin strips of noodles. The noodle tasted really nice, the meat is juicy (probably full of fat haha) and best of all it is not salty.

The fried rice in the background is nothing to shout about. Rice is a compulsory dish if Fong Fong is around!! The dumplings in focus is the signature steamed shanghai pork dumplings. it is a testament to the chef's skill when you pick up dumplings individually without the dumpling skin breaking (and thus spilling all the tasty soup). I give this dish a 10/10.

This is what they claim to be their signature dish as well. Instead of pork fillings, it is filled with crab meat and pork. Although it tasted good (Cleo and my mother in law loved it), personally I still think Din Tai Fung should stick with the traditional meat dumplings.

Fong Fong as usual insisted on sitting on my mother in law's lap while he eats. Manja....

In total, we ordered 2 baskets of dumplings (half dozen each), one fried rice and one "La Mien". 3 ice tea and one warm water. Total damage? RM65 inclusive of taxes. In my opinion it is not cheap, but totally worth the money spent. Food rating? 8/10 (I would have given it full makrs but for the "normal" signature fried rice and crab meat dumplings). Staff friendliness? 10/10. Children Friendly? 10/10

So head on to The Gardens, adjacent to Mid-Valley Mall, Din Tai Fung is at the Lower Ground. It is best to call (+603 2283 2292) for reservations as it is usually packed on the weekends.

Taxation: Life is not fair

I recently was paid some commission from my company for assisting in a sales closure. i was ecstatic!!!. i was already planning to buy a few things...but I was shocked that i had to pay more than half in taxes. Ok I was still fine with the tax deduction, I mean it is only fair that I pay taxes...what really cheesed me off is that i was recently informed that by the inland revenue that i still owe roughly RM1300 plus for my 2007 assessment!!!.

sigh...I am dreading the taxes that i will have to pay when i get my salary adjustment.

Any suggestions on how i can reduce my tax payments???

Here In My Home

What an inspiring song this is! The video is cute too. RTM should take note and produce these kinds of songs instead of the usual patriotic ballads that are kind of boring.

Our Fish Pet
We inherited a beta fish from our friend Louise. He is named Wilhemina. Yes we know that is a girl's name.... but the name came with the fish. We've shortened it to Mina. We think he might be blind on one side of the eye because sometimes he doesn't see the fish food we drop into the aquarium. It's quite nice having a fish in the apartment. He can be quite entertaining to watch.

This is Mina's favourite resting spot. It's quite funny to see him swim around and snuggle into the corner.

Tony Roma's
My brother salivates everytime he talks about the ribs at Tony Roma's. We decided to taste these ribs. They were indeed really good!
Anand's 10k Marathon
Today, Anand took part in the largest marathon in Toronto. 10,000 people participated. It took Anand 1hour and 15 minutes to complete the run :D

Spring Had Sprung! After a long winter and mountainous of snow, spring has finally arrived. The colours of new buds and blossoms are refreshing.

Winterlude Ottawa 2008 What do you do when it's cold outside? You go out and enjoy it! And that's what exactly we did. We went to Ottawa for Winterlude, the annual winter festival. Winterlude occurs over 3 weeks. We went on the very first weekend. We rented skates $15 per pair for 2 hours each, (So expensive! We are definitely buying our own skates!), and skated on the Rideau Canal: The World Largest Skating Rink. It is a designated UN World Heritage Site. Well, I tried to skate... there were pot holes the size of my arm... I gave up. Anand is a much better skater.
There were also some really neat ice sculptures. Can you see the mouse in the ice sculpture? In case you were wondering how much snow there is... ... normally you can see the tree trunks. ... we could barely see these park benches!

Vietnam: Ho Chi Minh

I was recently in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) for a couple of days, surprisingly all flights (Malaysia airlines at least) were full. Hotels were fully booked too. Initially we were supposed to stay at the Park Hyatt which would have set me back about USD250 a night, but since it was fully booked our partners recommended Majestic Saigon

The Majestic is one of the oldest hotels in HCMC and was established in 1922. Staying at the Majestic, brought back fond memories of E&O Hotel in Penang.

I was pretty impressed with the lobby and was amazed by its tall ceilings.

Nothing to shout about, as far as the room goes, but when I entered the washroom I was greeted by the largest sink I have ever seen!!! Its seriously big, I mean I could use it as a bathtub for Anthony!!

The hotel roof top bar has a wonderful view of the Saigon River...

One thing that never ceased to amazed me was the amount of motorcycles on the road!!!

On my first day, I tried to cross a busy road...it took me more than 10 minutes. According to locals, "just walk confidently across the road...do not stop in the middle...walk with a consistent speed...the motorcycles will avoid you!!" true enough, they did! what a scary experience.

My co-workers and I could not help but make a pilgrimage to "Parkson" a Malaysian chain store. Price wise it is similar to Malaysia.

While waiting for our cab (its only RM50 for one day...really cheap) outside of Parkson, I noticed that Vietnamese do not have an inkling of what "side walks" are meant for...case in point is the above pic. In a short span of 10 minutes I saw 5 cars driving along the side walk to avoid the traffic!!!

Anyway, I am due back in HCMC in about 3 weeks, will post a more comprehensive report...till then, how do you pronounce pepper in Vietnamese? Its sounds really obscene in cantonese!!

Bragging Rights!!!

On Sunday June 17th I participated in HeiTech's Annual Golf Tournament. Two medals were being offered, namely the Chairman's Cup (handicap 15 and below) and the President's cup (handicap 24 - 16).

Initially I was reluctant to play, as I have not had the time to practice and the last time I played on the greens was just after Chinese New Year. Anyway my co-workers finally convinced me that I should join just for fun.

Anyway, I only managed to get in 4 sessions at the driving range prior to the tournament...

unexpectedly I came in second!!!...I scored a total of 20 points according to the Stableford scoring system. The winner of the President's cup scored a total of 17 points. Surprisingly I only lost 2 balls compared to the usual 10!!! haha...

I won RM250 worth of ISETAN shopping vouchers...looks like I have to take the missus for a spot of shopping this weekend.

Toronto: Woofstock

Some of you are pretty well aware that the "Ang-Mo" really pamper their pets. Dogs don't just eat scraps from the kitchen but get doctor prescribed diets, presents at Christmas, spa treatments, and even get pushed around in strollers.
Now they have Woofstock, a Festival for Dogs. What happens at Woofstock? Just about anything that goes on for humans, just replace it for dogs. So where there would be high tea, contests, free food for humans... there would be all of the above for dogs. It brings loving your pet to another level... a bit much don't you think?

Toronto: Naked Bike Ride
No we didn't bike around naked! But a group of people bared all (except for footwear) as they cycled down the streets of downtown Toronto. Their aim is to bring awareness to pollution caused by vehicles.

We found it quite amusing, since we weren't sure whether they were a bunch of loonie-bins... until we saw that they were escorted by fully clothed policemen on bicycles.
