There was a full moon on new year's eve, when I finally got my tripod and camera config all setup the clouds started to obscure the moon. I took 40 plus shots of the moon but I reckon this is one of the better ones. The moon seems to be surrounded by an inner ring of blue...I think I may need to budget for a better tripod and a remote shutter release...and if the finance minister allows...a 300mm zoom lens haha.

Some Random Pictures

Its been a pretty hectic week and I have not had the chance to play with the D90 much. Anyway we decided to go out for a drive around town this morning with the intention of doing some Christmas shopping, but we spent most our time stuck in the car due to the traffic congestion...anyway here are some random pics that I took today with some comments added in to give you a sense of where I took the pictures and what was going through my mind when I took them.

Took this in Bangsar, which is a high end neighborhood. However I was surprised to find that there is a block of low cost flats behind the Maybank building. I suppose the condition of the flag (torn and dirty) symbolizes the general condition of the flats and its surrounding area. Its quite sad to see that no one bothered to up keep the general surroundings, but it was sadder to see that the symbol of your country is in such a poor state...I suppose it reflects the general mood of the country at the moment?

I managed to get a quick shot of Victor while he was patiently waiting for the adults to get ready. He was in such a contemplative mood. Probably wondering where we would be taking him today.

Anthony insist that he has to have a camera as well so I gave him my Canon Powershot that I bought many many moons ago. He has been happily snapping away on the camera. I suppose in 10 years time he would want his own DSLR...it would give me a very good excuse to upgrade haha. I am going to encourage him, it will be a good platform for me and him to get closer. Father and son bonding thing...if you get what I mean.

After being stuck in traffic for most of the morning, we decided to have chicken rice at Jalan Gasing. Expensive but totally worth it.

Anyway, I am looking forward to tomorrow...am going to try my hand at taking some pictures of the Christmas decorations.

It That Time of Year Again: Up Goes The Christmas Tree

With Christmas just round the corner its that time of the year again where the tree has to come up. So after completing the grocery shopping at the night market and after a sumptuous meal of Nasi Lemak we decided to put up the Christmas tree. Oh by the way, you might have noticed that the quality of pictures have drastically improved...the pictures taken are from my Nikon D90.

Anthony as usual was super excited. He has been bugging us the whole day..."when are we putting up the tree?? huh? huh?". When Cleo went searching for the tree in the store room Anthony could not help himself from jumping up and down as well as starting to chant "we are putting up the Christmas tree...we are putting up the Christmas tree"

Victor as seen here is also excited. I don't really know whether he knows the significance of Christmas yet, but as it is his first Christmas as a 1 year old he was super excited and started to walk all over the place while waving his small flag.

While Cleo and Anthony were busy unpacking the tree, Victor was practicing his walking. He can walk now albeit still unsteady. At one point yesterday evening he fell while trying to walk and I managed to capture it with a continuous shutter burst of 3 frames. Ahhh the beauty of having a Dslr...my point and shoot would not have been able to capture it.

Once the tree was unpacked, Anthony could not wait to put up the decorations. Victor was somehow fascinated with the tree.

Two good looking toddlers in Putra Heights...and some say in the entire USJ too...*wink* *wink*

In 1985 or was it 1986 I saw Hailey's Comet. I can still remember peering into the eye piece of the Celestron as well as looking at the comet through a pair of binoculars. When I was told that it will return in 2086, I made a promise to myself that I will take pictures of it. I love astronomy...not the technical side of it. I know my constellations pretty well. My dream is to own a good DSLR and a Celestron telescope to take pictures of the moon, planets, galaxies...and if I am still alive in 2086 take pictures of Hailey's Comet...that is a dream that I hope I can fulfil.

National Day Eve BBQ

We decided to have a get together among friends to celebrate the Merdeka (Malaysian Independence day).

We invited about 20 people...friends plus some of our colleagues. As usual preparation of the food started from early in the morning. Starting with the marketing then the marinating. The menu consisted of:

Fresh portobello mushrooms stuffed with cheddar cheese, cheery tomatoes and wrapped with streaky bacon.
Pork Ribs marinated with smokey bbq sauce and chilly.
Yong Tau Foo (bean curd stuffed with mince pork).
Fresh Prawns without any marination (so as to appreciate the natural sweetness of the prawns)
Squid marinated with a pinch of salt and pepper.
Lamb Chops marinated with black pepper sauce.
Pork Stay marinated with my mom's minced chilly and tumeric.
Fried bee hoon (rice noodles)
Fried garlic rice

of course being the VVIP, Victor had to be fed first prior to the arrival of our guests...

We even had an official photographer for the event...He is a very low profile but highly in demand professional...if you need him to cover your event drop me a line and I will hook you up...by the way, the pics taken here are from my "point and shoot" Nikon compact digital cam and not from a DSLR...just in case if you are wondering *wink*

Of course after awhile we took turns BBQ'ing...I was getting hungry and thirsty (for beer heheh)...also had some business discussions going on at the same time...

The Kids of course enjoyed themselves...by the time Fong Fong slept it was around 1230am....wayyyyyyy past his bedtime.

The adults also enjoyed the night...

I am saddened...no strike that...SICK of narrow minded individuals or groups who still live in the dark ages. Today's paper highlighted the protest of a group of 50 muslims who is against the relocation of a Hindu temple to seksyen 23 Shah Alam. What was the reason given? 80% of seksyen 23 Shah Alam are Muslims...what kind of mentality is that? Malaysia is getting all kinds of publicity...the wrong kind of publicity...sigh. Today's Star headlines the statement made by the DPM that Malaysians will no longer need to state their race in official forms soon. ABOUT TIME!!!! As a Malaysian I am pissed off that every time I fill up a Government form I need to indicate my race. For goodness sake why indicate your race? The reason for the change in policy is due to the PM's vision of 1Malaysia...which by the way my dear PM is not new. Just visit Kelantan (my home state) and you will see the 'muhibah-ness' of Kelantanese. All races are one...in my opinion Kelantan is the ultimate example of racial unity...1Malaysia? Come on...this concept is nothing new.

BN Fielding Disbarred Lawyer

I am shocked...ok let's be honest..I am disgusted at the Barisan Nasional for fielding a candidate in the Permatang Pasir by election that has been disbarred by the Malaysian Bar for misconduct. The candidate in question, was found guilty for failure of refunding RM161K. I have always thought that prospective candidates must be clean...ok...granted everyone is human...but come on, who would want to have an elected official that has been tainted? No matter how the BN spins it, the candidate was found guilty. I find the statement released by BN stating that the Bar Council's action is "just an action taken by a group responsible for its members' discipline" ridiculous...come on..don't the BN conduct background checks on their potential canditates before announcing the candidacy?...please don't mistake me for supporting the opposition. I am apolitical. I don't support any particular party.

This is my latest acquisition... I personally think this is a better watch than my Timex e-Expedition...the compass is always accurate...the barometer is very accurate...that is after you figure out how to use it...tried out the altimeter which is also an excellent feature. My only grip? Casio has not figured out to accurately determine the temperature when the watch is worn on the wrist...when worn on the wrist the temperature has an accuracy of +-3 degrees Celsius...oh by the way as its titanium the watch is extremely light for its size...it also comes with a stainless steel,rubber or white titanium bracelet...I paid a premium for the black titanium heheh :) thanks to the Home Minister for approving the budget.

Camping during Victoria Day Weekend
This is a bit of a late post. We went to Ferris Provincial Park for a 2 night camping trip. It's about 2 hours away. It was freezing that weekend! With forst warning and all... bbrrr.... but we had a good time.

Sorry for not blogging: Been Traveling

Yes I know that I have not been updating the blog...it has been an extremely hectic start to the year. I have been re-assigned from COO of a subsidiary to head up my parent company's Special Projects Department for the Middle-East.

For the past two weeks I have traveled to Riyadh, Jeddah, Doha, Dubai and Abu Dhabi....it has been extremely tiring yet fruitful business trip. There are so many opportunities in the Middle-East...provided that you have the right partners.

Anyway I will be uploading pictures of the wonderful sights encountered during my trip...for the next 3 months I will be flying in and out of the Mid-East...possibly will be stationed here...let's see how things goes...its going to be exciting.

Making Muruku

We used a package mix to make the muruku. The recipe to make muruku from scratch involves a pressure cooker and that was a bit more work than we had time for. The mix is quite good, especially after we added cumin seeds and sesame seeds. Yum!

Cavalcade of Lights

Every year, to celebrate Christmas, the City of Toronto holds a festival called the Cavalcade of Lights. There are concerts and a firworks show after the concert all for FREE! City Hall was decorated in many many lights!

Tonight, we braved the cold to watch Serena Ryder perform. I really love her music.

Anand was all wrapped up ready for the cold.
And look at these kids playing in the snow!

The best part of the night was the Fireworks Show. Fireworks came shooting out of City Hall.

And then there were two people scaling down the sides with fireworks shooting out of their backs! All of this choreographed to music. AWESOME!!!

Winter Snow Storm

It snowed the whole day yesterday. I think we got about 20cm of snow. I like walking in the snow though... it gives the "crunch crunch" sound from your footsteps. Today is going to be a very cold day, -17C, that means all the snow is going to freeze. Those who didn't shovel yesterday will have a back breaking task today.

Normally, you can see the CN Tower and pretty much the whole of downtown from our apartment. Look at the photo below for comparison. It was taken today.

And even in this weather, there are die hard cyclists.

My Own Henna Design
I've always liked getting henna tattoos. I think they are very pretty. I rarely get them because they are expensive. So when Anand went to Indian town to look for a muruku press (yes, we are going to do our own murukkus), I spotted henna tubes and they were only for $1.50 for a small tube and $2 for a big tube.

So now I can have fun doing this. Only thing is I have to wait 1-2 weeks before I can practice again.

Note to Self: Check that you have the house keys before locking the door.

Being a Saturday, decided to take the family for a spot of window shopping at Ikano and the curve. We had nothing in particular to buy, but wanted to take the kids out to see the Christmas decorations. Upon reaching home around 8pm, I discovered that I locked us out of the house. It was too late to call a locksmith so I called a contractor friend to borrow an electric saw. After getting the electric saw, I realised that I was totally hopeless! I could not even find the switch to turn it on. Luckily my cousin in law was on hand to assist and we manage to cut through the grill and open the door....now for the welding...

McD offers free re-fills of carbonated drinks at most of their outlets. A little bird from Eygpt told me that in order to enjoy continuos free re-fills by just having to pay once all you have to do is bring the original cup home, wash it, then bring it out the next time you are at a mall...present the cup and wah la...you get your free drink hahah....so kiam siap (stingy)

Daorae Korean Restaurant: Taipan USJ

As Cleo's mom is leaving for Australia on Wednesday the 4th of December (she is going there for a month as a confinement women), we decided to take her to a Korean Restaurant in Taipan as a treat. The restaurant has been in operation for close to 2 years but we have not given it a try as normally Korean food are expensive and we were saving it for a special occasion.

The tables come with a "circular bbq pit" in the middle. Above each "pit" there is an extraction fan, which frankly does not work too well. When the restaurant started to fill up the place become quite smokey and stuffy.

We got a window seat and Anthony started playing with the camera, the first pic is taken by him and the second by me...mine of course is the more high quality one haha...saving up for a Digital SLR...at the way things are going probably I can buy one in 2 years time haha.

Each of us are given 3 types of sauce. The first one is some kind of sweet sauce, the second is the Korean version of sambal and the third is chilly sauce. I am so used to eating chilly and frankly the Korean sambal and chilly does not even tickle my tastebuds.

We ordered a plate of BBQ Pork and a plate of BBQ Chicken.

The first pic is the chicken which is coated in some lightly spiced sauce and the pork is the second pic which goes extremely well with the raw garlic.

Anthony as usual was restless. Did not manage to take the pic of him running all over the restaurant. The staff were extremely friendly, they played with him and generally kept him out of harm's way.

Victor was also feeling restless, but he finally fell asleep after Cleo carried him. He can really cry when he does not get his way.

The best thing about Korean food is the unlimited servings of side dishes. Each of us were served a steaming bowl of seaweed soup which tasted extremely good. It is not as salty as miso soup. We were also served a bowl of steamed egg with seaweed. Personally, I did not enjoy the egg as it was quite bland. The smaller plates in the third pic are the various side dishes ranging from kimchi, salads, cockles, spicy eggs (extremely spicy, this dish definately tickled my taste buds to the extreme), tofu and loads of other stuff.

We also order a serving of seafood noodles and a serving of kimchi fried rice with egg. The fried rice tasted "normal" it's like nasi goreng tomato. But the noodles are out of this world!! extremely good and worth every penny.

Towards the end of the meal we were pleasantly surprised that they served us Korean pancake on the house for dessert. It is extremely nice and slightly crunchy, albeit slightly more oily than what I am used to. Fruits were also served, but we did not consume the fruits as Anthony wanted to "rush" home.

Anyway, in conclusion I give the restaurant a rating of 9 out of 10. It is value for money. Price wise it is definitely way below normal Korean Restaurant prices. Further, the staff are extremely friendly and it is definitely family friendly. The staff were very attentive and always kept an eye on Anthony when he was running around the restaurant.

Charlie Wilson's War

Watched Charlie Wilson's War last night. I must admit that I initially had reservations in purchasing this DVD as I am not really into political drama. But since Tom Hanks is the main lead I thought I give it a try.

The movie is based on a book of the same title and it chronicles how Congressman Charlie Wilson supported the Mujaheedin in their fight against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan by convincing members of Congress in allocating money, funneled through the CIA, to purchase weapons.

All in all Congressman Wilson convinced the US Government is spending USD1 Billion in the fight against the Soviets.

I don't want to give too much details as it will spoil the movie for you, but what I found ironic is that the US Government did not hesitate in spending the USD1B in the war, but they refused to allocate even US1million in building schools and the necessary infrastructure to rebuild the country after the Soviets retreated.

The failure of the US Government in spending the money to rebuild Afghanistan indirectly resulted in the resurgence of militant Islamic groups and the rest as they say is history.

Anyway, I highly recommend the movie. Do watch it, buy the original DVD., you won't regret it.....else go to any torrent sites and download it hahaha.

P/S: To my dear wife, a Christmas present in the form of this book and "Inside the Delta Force" would be highly appreciated hahaha

President Sarkozy

So I have the uncanny ability to get a glimpse of states-persons when on vacation. I saw Queen Elizabeht II in England, Jean-Pierre Raffarin, PM of France (yes, France has a PM), and now Anand and I saw President Sarkozy last weekend.

President Sarkozy was in Quebec City for the Francophone Summit. He was here before he flew off to see President Bush. In these photos, he is unveiling a plaque, and the Premier of Quebec, Jean Charest is with him along with other VIPs.

There was tight security when Sarkozy arrived, snipers appeared on the roof top and also on the helicopters.

Porter Airlines

We decided to take Porter Airlines to Quebec City. Unlike other airlines, Porter's terminal is located in the Toronto City Center Airport. From our condo, it only takes 15 minutes by taxi. And we can arrive at the airport 30 minutes before departure time.

The whole experience was excellent! There was hardly any wait to clear security. There was a wonderful lounge for us to wait in with complimentary drinks (juice, pop, water), coffee, tea, and other goodies. There were also newspapers and many Mac computers with internet access for passengers to use while they waited for their flight! I would take Porter again!

Victor Eng Jiat Jiang: The Journey of Birth

The day of delivery started off with Cleo having to sort out work related matters such as delegation of work to her colleagues as well as finishing tying up loose ends in terms of audit reports.

Upon reaching the hospital we had to patiently wait for our turn to be admitted, surprisingly there were quite a number of people waiting to be admitted for delivery. Cleo looks surprising clam, I was not as I was quite apprehensive due to the fact that it would be my first time entering the operating room...scared of fainting. The first pic shows my mom going through Victor's baby book.

For those of you who wants to purchase 4D...our que number is 1010...please share the winnings with me...hehhe.

We took the decision to store Victor's stem cell, this is due to the fact that on our side of the family (Cleo and mine) there has been history of blood cancer. It is sort of an insurance in the event (touch wood) that Victor faces complications in the future....we decided to pay for the full amount to store the stem cell for 21 years...which resulted in me being "broke"...I have to sacrifice my golfing on the greens...family first, self later.

Upon admission, the nurses in Ward 2A took Cleo's various vital details such as height, weight, blood etc.

We decided to have a single bedded room, but the room was not yet ready thus they put us in a two bedded temporarily while waiting for the room to be ready. Cleo is checking out the admission kit which came with all kinds of "goodies" such as towels, napkins etc.

Prior to being "rolled" into the operation room, Cleo was hooked up to a machine to monitor the baby's heart beat to ensure that all is hunky dory. The other purpose was to ascertain as to whether the baby was in the right "state' to be delivered.

In the first pic Cleo is being prepared for her C-Section and the second pic she is being wheeled to the operating theater. While in the operating theater I could not take any pics of the C-Section procedure. All I can say is that I will never ever forget the scenes such as the the blood, mucus and the various bodily fluids that is associated with the procedure. I did not faint but nearly emptied my stomach contents...thank God I manged to keep it all in.

This pic was taken immediately after Victor was welcomed into the world...he was crying non-stop due to the fact that he was very cold. The mid-wife immediately wrapped him up and put him under a warmer....I was so moved that I was on the verged of shedding tears of joy.

Paternal Responsibilities

I have been a father for nearly 3 years now, I am going to be a father for the second time in a few hours. Besides ensuring that my family has a roof over their heads, comfortable life and the usual paternal responsibilities related cliches I have come to realise that its not what I as a father provide for the family in monetary and material form that matters most...what is important is the time that I spend with my family and most important are the values that I impart to my kids. Values such as respect and humility. Patience and being humble. Always do your utmost best...and the most important of all...respect for your wife...you can be an asshole...you can be public enemy number 1...but if you respect and seek your wife's advice as an equal partner, you can always be assured of a safe and warm sanctury at HOME...a place where you can seek comfort and solace from work and peer related pressure.

My Kitchen: Hainanese Cuisine

After seeing an advertisement int he papers for this restaurant and being Hainanese, we decided that it would be a grave crime if we did not at least give this place a try. I was initially very skeptical as to whether this restaurant would be serving authentic Hainanese fare.

However upon entering the restaurant I was pleasantly surprised to find that they have a menu of Hainanese fair that is typically served during Chinese New Year.

The menu has an extensive range of hainanese fair, but some of them are not really original...I mean hainanese got nasi lemak one meh?

We ordered quite a few dishes. The rice balls are a definite must try, its way better than the ones you get in Malacca. The mutton soup is also highly recommended. The Hainanese Chicken Chop is soooooooooooooo good that I am salivating while I type this. In total, we ordered about 9 dishes inclusive of 5 drinks. Price wise it is reasonable. Cost my parents only Rm85. The vege and steamed chicken is nothing to should about.

Rating out of 10? I give it 9...the chicken chop and rice balls contributed 5 points.

Head of the Trent

After 2 years, Anand and I finally made it ot Head of the Trent. It is an annual rowing regatta (largest one-day regatta in North America) at Trent University, where I did my undergrad. It is also an alumni reunion of sorts.

The highlight is standing on the bridge and waiting for the rowers to row underneath you. Then you cross to the other side to see who has won. It is fun! Since this is held in the Fall, it is usually cold and damp.

For those who like to drink, there is a Beer Garden.

Gourmet Garden

I have been thinking about Malaysian food for quite some time. So last Friday, Anand and I went to this food court in Markham that sold Malaysian food. Markham is about 30 minutes drive from Toronto if there is no traffic jam. It is a suburb that is mainly populated by people of Chinese descent.

So in this food court, there were 4 shops. One selling the usual roast duck/chicken/pork, another selling Philipino food and another selling Cantonese food. The fourth and most popular one is Gourmet Garden, selling Malaysian food. The menu is extensive! Even have bak kut teh, poh pia (weekend only), asam fish, ayam percik. Anand and I ordered Char Keow Tiao, Petai Asam Udang and Roti Canai with Chicken Curry.

Anand had never eaten petai before. He said it tasted like paper. Only the next day did he understand why I said it is also called stinky beans. Value for money is good. Taste is good, except that the Chicken Curry was salty. My Char Keow Teow is good but not the same as home. Maybe the Keow Teow we get here is not the same. The funny thing is that we both felt heavy after dinner. Not sure if it is due to the fact that we pigged-out (large portions - the Char Keow Teow can be shared with 2 people), or is it the MSG?

So we'll go back and test again :)

Geylang: The Red Light District of Singapore

After dinner in China Town, we decided to head on to Singapore's famous Red Light District for some sight-seeing. Officially we went to Geylang in search of Sui Yu Tong (Tortoise Soup)..but somehow we got distracted.

To get to Geylang, we took the MRT from China Town to Aljunied MRT Station which is situated at Lorong 25 Geylang. Upon exiting Aljunied MRT station I was amazed by the amount of people loitering outside the station, rubbish was everywhere!! I turned to Kar Wai and said "I feel like I just arrived in Jakarta". Unfortunately I don't have the pictures as I have not figured out how to use the night mode photo capture on my camera yet.

We started our journey from Lorong 25...we walked everywhere, back alleys, main roads, truck roads etc. Did we see any ladies of the night? Nope, nothing close to it. What we did find were loads of places to eat.

There were loads of restaurants selling all kinds of food. Frog porridge is apparently a crowd favorite, so is roasted duck. Almost all of the restaurants that we came across sells duck and frog.

There was even a durian stall selling durians for SGD2 each!! That is dirt cheap. but unfortunately we were not in the mood to eat durians.

We walked and walked and walked for more than an hour and finally decided to call it a day and headed back to Lorong 25 for the MRT Station.

Did we find any action?

Yup, indeed we did...and it only cost me SGD0.80 per tube. Kar Wai's mouth is now clean and fit for kissing. So line up and pukker your lips!!!

Teo Chew Fish Ball Noodle, China Town

For dinner we decided to head towards China Town as we heard that the food there is one of the best as well as being very reasonably priced.

Before we boarded the MRT to China Town, we were faced with the problem of how to use the "high tech" ticketing machine. It took us quite sometime to figure out that the machine was equipped with a touch screen monitor...duh!!!!..being the jakun that I am, Kar Wai bravely volunteered to be guinea pig. After a couple of minutes he managed to figure out how to purchase a ticket.

Upon reaching China Town we promptly headed towards the "People's Park" Food Court. I was on a mission, I wanted to satisfy my craving for chicken rice after a disappointing chicken rice meal for lunch.

However, upon entering the food court Kar Wai noticed that most diners were feasting on gigantic fish balls. When I say gigantic I mean the fish balls were bigger than ping pong balls. So we went in search of the fish balls and came across this stall. A long line of people were forming in front of this stall and based on the logical deduction that if the locals are patiently queuing up to buy a bowl of this fish ball it must be good.

While waiting in line, I took the opportunity to snap a few photos of the Aunty behind the counter preparing the noodles. She worked continuously without any rest, scooping steaming portions of noodles and fish-balls into bowls to be served by her assistant.

After waiting patiently for more than 15 minutes I was served this....look at the size of the fish balls!!!. I paid SGD4 for a large portion, Kar Wai Paid SGD3 for a regular portion. The difference? He got 2 less fish balls. I am really not able to articulate the taste and ecstasy of each bite. To put it bluntly, each bite felt like an amalgamated explosion of taste...it was and still is orgasmic...as I type this my mouth is literally watering...maybe I will head there again for lunch tomorrow haha.

As it was so hot and humid in the food court, plus the fact that I requested for an extra spicy portion resulted in me sweating profusely...I certainly got a few strange stares from the locals.

Antony Bourdain, if you are reading this...head on over to China Town in Singapore and que up at this fish ball noodle store at the People's Park Food Court and be prepared to enjoy an orgasmic gastronomic experience.

Hotel Grand Central, Singapore

On this trip to Singapore, I insisted on staying at a "better" yet reasonably priced hotel. The last trip to Singapore I stayed at the Summer View Hotel in Bencoolen Street, which in my opinion should be voted as one of the worst hotels in the Lion City. Anyway, on this trip I was booked into the Hotel Grand Central, I was seriously not expecting much due to the bad reviews that I goggled.

The reception area is nice enough for a 3 star rated hotel. The front desk staff were not too friendly, oh well this is not exactly the Marriott or even the Aston Rasuna. Anyway, we proceeded to check in and was told that the room was not yet ready!! We checked in at 3pm and the room was not yet ready. So no point arguing, we then headed to a nearby food court for some chicken rice which was nothing to shout about.

When I got into the room i was surprised! It was pleasantly clean and "fresh" smelling. Quite spacious and extremely clean. The only complaint is the toilet, which is quite small. But what the heck, after the nightmare stay at the Summerview Hotel the Hotel Grand Central is "luxurious".

However if you are expecting a room with a view, you will be extremely disappointed. This is the view that I have...ahhh...pleasant view of office blocks....another complaint is that the air conditioning is centralized...the current room temperature is 20 degrees celcius (measured by my TIMEX e-Expedition Watch)...freezing.

However on a brighter note, my room mate has managed to hook up both our laptops to enable us to use one Internet account which cost SGD30 per 24 hour block.

In conclusion, Hotel Grand Central is worth a stay if you are on a tight budget..it is also strategically located on Orchard Road and walking distance to Plaza Singapura as well as the Istana.

Rating out of 10? I give it 6/10 purely for value for money.

When I stumbled on to this poster on the net I was laughing really hard, but then it also got me worried. Would Fong Fong and my soon to be born son turn out like this? I am not an angel by any means, but I certainly was not that wild. I guess it all depends on what are the values that is imparted by the parents to their child. I vow to impart the values that was passed to me by my parents. I vow to bring up our children as good and responsible citizens of the world....if any of my kids turn out like the kids depicted in the poster...just shoot me.

Frustration

What is frustration? and what causes it? For me frustration is generally caused by work. Ok, I lie...its also caused by not being able to perfect my golf swing. But generally its caused by work. Too many deliverables but not being given the right support, budget and tools to execute the work is causing me a lot of frustration and unnecessary stress.

But on the bright side, I have seen the true colors of my colleagues and I now know how to deal with them. I suppose my people management skills have also improved...how to manage a team who are under constant pressure.

There is light at the end of the tunnel...whether that tunnel is with this current organization or with another one....only time will tell.

Bukit Jelutong Par 3 Challenge

My colleagues and I decided to play a quick round of golf at Bukit Jelutong Pitch and Putt course. From left, Chris "Tiger" Gui, Kar "Tiger" Wai and William "Tiger" Eng. All of us would like to think we are "Tiger Woods", in actual fact we are more like "Kayu" (direct Malay translation, which also means "stupid" or "backwards".

The course is situated in a former palm oil estate. The course designer has maintained the palm oil trees which is quite "environmentally" friendly. The reason for the inverted commas, is due to the fact that it is a known fact that golf courses uses tonnes of fertilizers which may or may not harm the environment.

However, the golf course is not that well maintained as attested by the above picture. I wonder can this be processed by iGTS?

Not exactly a packed gallery tee-off, but "Tiger" Kar Wai is concentrating hard. He nearly got a hole-in-one.

Feeding Monkeys

We took Fong Fong on our weekly monkey feeding trip on Sunday. The Monkeys "live" at the foot of a small "mountain" (I don't know whether to classify it as a mountain or a hill). Anyway every afternoon around 5 or so, families will be at the foot of the "mountain" to feed the monkeys. Some of them even buy fruits like apples and bananas as well as biscuits.

We brought some dates that was given to me by my company to feed the monkeys. Fong Fong had an extremely good time feeding the primates.

As usual Fong Fong enjoyed himself so much that he did not want to leave. We had to practically drag him home!!!

Chinese Poem

少小離家老大回，

鄉音無改鬢毛摧。

兒童相見不相識，

笑問客從何處來？

This is one of my all time favourite Chinese poems. I honestly do not know who is the poet, anyone know please do message me. It basically encapsulates what I sometimes feel when I go back to my home town and visit my high school. No one knows me anymore haha.

For the benefit of those who do not read Chinese characters the han yi pin yin translation is:

Shao xiao li jia lao da hui,
xiang yin wu gai ping mao chui,
er tong xiang jian pu xiang shi,
xiao wen ke chong her chu lai.

Not too sure whether the pin yin is correct or not, but at least I tried. This is the only poem whereby I can still recite from memory as well as read the characters. Lately I have found that Chinese poems are more beautiful and meaningful if compared to English ones.

Some of you might differ, but this is my personal opinion.

Gardening

When it comes to gardening I am by no means a "green hand". But I was pleasantly surprised this morning to find that the papaya tree that was planted a couple months back is doing good.

In Pic 1 you can see that the flower has formed into a shape of a small papaya. i am crossing my fingers that it will grow into a proper fruit, since the last few times after forming into a shape of a papaya, it turns brown and falls off. The other two pics are flowers on other parts of the tree that are just blooming, Hopefully these turn into fruits as well.

My mother-law has also planted some Kangkong (Pic 1), Curry Leave (Pic 2) and Winter Melon (Pic 3 & 4). I am not sure whether its called a winter melon but the chinese call the melon "lau huang qua". My mom is also planning to grow some long beans which will hopefully grow onto the fence ...won't it be beautiful?

My other little papaya tree is sadly not doing too good, despite the fertilizers, sunshines and water. I am going to change the fertilizer mixture and see whether it will do it any good.

What can I say? I stayed at this hotel for 3 weeks last year, and now my colleagues will be visiting Copenhagen in a few weeks time. All I can say is have "fun" and enjoy the kebab and spaghetti while you are there...I am so jealous that you all will be there....sorry type...I am so happy that you all will be there...alamak...sorry typo again...I am soooooooooooo NOT JEALOUS you all will be there...hahah...have a good meeting and fruitful trip...oh yah don't forget to eat some kebabs on my behalf.

Sigh. I really do not know why this idiot is still so unrepentant. Why must he still bring up the issue that it was the British that brought the Chinese in to work the mines and the Indians to work the estates...why must he still harp that the Bumis (when he says Bumis, I am sure he means the Malays and not the other indigenous groups) were marginalized in terms of education because the British gave priority to the Chinese in terms of education opportunities.

I am sad. It is not right. Racial politics is the thing of the past.

SS19 Subang Jaya Ramadan Food Market

We decided to head towards the food market in SS19 on Sunday. Parking as usual was a problem. The food market was so packed with people or all races and religion buying food. This is the absolute beauty with Malaysia, multi-racial and multi-religion. Politics asides, I think people on the street get along extremely well without any prejudices at all. why can't our politicians get this right???

Food...oh...Food...For those of you based overseas...salivate on this hahahaahahahahhahaha...

Dim Sum: Sri Petaling

As my dad is a big fan of Dim Sum, decided to haul the whole family to Sri Petaling, which is about 20 mins drive from my place. The particular establishment that we visited is famous for the "Kai Pau" literally translated it means "Chicken Dumpling".

This is their signature "Kai Pau". Its basically "Lor Mai Kai" = Glutinous Chicken Rice wrapped with "Pau"= Dumpling. It is very tasty and juicy if compared to the conventional "Lor Mai Kai".

Of course, we ordered my dad's favorite (fried carrot cake) and the usual dim sum fare.

Anthony, as usual wants to sit on someone's lap while waiting for the food to arrive. Very "manja" with my dad.

All over the "restaurant" are plastered with news paper clippings featuring the food. In my opinion, if you really crave for a "Kai Pau", this is the place to go. But having said that, if you just want to savor the conventional Dim Sum fare there are other better places. Overall I give a rating of 5/10.

Celebration Dinner: Overseas Restaurant, Subang Parade

We decided to take my parents and Cleo's mom out for dinner at Overseas Restaurant In Subang Parade. The dinner was to celebrate my parents wedding anniversary as well as to celebrate Cleo's promotion to Head of Internal Audit and my promotion in terms of grade.

Food Ordered:
- Sizzling Bean Curd.
- Salted fish and Prok Belly in Claypot
- Mixed vege in sambal
- Stir Fried Fish Fillet
- Herbal Chicken Soup (individual bowl)
- Pork Ribs

Mr Anthony Eng as usual think rice is God's gift to man and only wants to eat plain rice. We had to trick him by mixing the bean curd as well as fish plus some soup into his rice.

I must say that Anthony is now "table trained" in terms of making sure that whatever is on the spoon gets into his mouth. Not that messy anymore. He still has a sharp eye, any "foreign" object in the rice like greens will be hand picked and discarded!

As for staff friendliness, I give the restaurant a 8/10. The staff are really friendly, I would have given full marks except for the fact that they do not provide plastic plates and bowls for children.

Food wise? I give a 9/10. It would have been full marks, but the sizzling bean curd was not sizzling when it was served and it is "normal". No additional toppings of meat or vegetables. I would have expected a 5 star Chinese Restaurant to serve something more elaborate and not what you can get from a "normal" restaurant.

But overall, in my opinion Overseas Restaurant is still considered one of the best Chinese Restaurants in town and is highly recommended if you want to treat your family.
